I joined the Biomedical Optics Research Laboratory in 2001.
For the past few years I have been working on near infrared
imaging systems. They are being used for topographic imaging of the
brain cortex amongst other things. Click here to look at our web page about
optical topography, and here
to look at a journal article about the system (pdf
format).
I also help to develop
and maintain the MONSTIR
system, which is used for tomographic imaging of the brain and
breast. Another project I've been working on recently is a new light
source for a retinal imaging camera. There's some more details about
that here.
I've also been working on a wireless, portable spectroscopy system, designed primarily to look at muscle tissue oxygenation.
I did my PhD at Middlesex University, finishing in 2001. It
involved designing and building a haemodialysis system for treating
premature babies with acute renal failure. Such a system is needed
because these babies are too small to be treated using conventional
paediatric dialysis systems. The work was done in cooperation with the
paediatric nephrology department of
the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle. Click here for a short tv appearance that
the system made recently (the video will take a while to start so be
patient, or download it first).
Before that I did an MSc in Biomedical Engineering at Surrey
University (Guildford).
My 1st degree was in Engineering, specializing in fluid mechanics.
